Arts Midwest World Fest presents
Los Utrera
Friday, October 17, 2008 • 10 am
Recommended for grade levels 4 - 12
Los Utrera will transport you to a “fandango,” a musical fiesta alive with the traditional sounds of Veracruz, Mexico. It’s a spicy, celebratory mix of music, dance and poetry played on traditional instruments – an authentic visual and musical adventure!
Los Utrera interprets and recreates music in verse and dance blending Spanish, African and indigenous influences. This family ensemble has established a reputation for exploring the traditional roots of “son,” as well as showing the relationships between the diverse cultures and contemporary world music genres. In a musical feast, they demonstrate “zapateado,” which is percussive dancing on a wooden platform, and perform with traditional instruments including a variety of guitars, folk harp and percussion. Described as one of the best Mexican Son Jarocho groups in today’s traditional music scene, Los Utrera has toured extensively throughout Mexico, South America and the Caribbean.
Artist Residency: October 12-18
