An audience favorite each year, the 80-member ISU Symphony Orchestra returns under the baton of Jacob Harrison, ISU Director of Orchestral Activities.

This narrated program will explore the instruments and sounds of the orchestra with Ottorino Respeghi’s Pines of Rome and Mason Bates’ Mothership.

Written in 1924, Pines of Rome was the first composition known to incorporate a pre-recorded sound – a bird call. This symphonic tone poem used extremely specific musical imagery and brilliant scoring and was the inspiration for many early Hollywood composers.

Embracing 21st century technology, Mothership was written for the 2011 YouTube orchestra and has been viewed over two million times. It is an electro-acoustic tour de force featuring improvisational solos that cross over between the classical and pop worlds.

Following the performance, students are invited to meet the musicians in the lobby for an ‘’instrument petting zoo,’ an opportunity to see and hear the instruments up close.

(Program is subject to change without notice.)

Over one hundred and fifty years ago, the United States of America split in half as the north and south waged war against each other over preserving a way of life versus preserving the union.

While decisions made by Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, and William Tecumseh Sherman affected the course of American history, ordinary Americans carried out these orders and often made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

This stirring production features traditional songs of the era while sensitively illustrating this complex, tumultuous chapter of American history. The Civil War illuminates the humanity and sacrifices of those who fought and the many who died by focusing on the smaller stories of soldiers who are caught up in the conflict. Meet Zak, a runaway slave who demands the right to fight his own fight; Will, his former best friend and “master;” Johnny, an Irish immigrant who volunteers to defend his new home; and Jackie, a girl who becomes a drummer boy.

Adapted from the Broadway version, Seussical is Theatreworks’ biggest show ever!

The Cat in the Hat is the host and emcee (and all-around mischief-maker) in this romp through the Seuss classics. Just imagine a world where anything is possible – an elephant in a tree, a person too tiny to see, a heroic child and dreams running wild! Think of a magical, musical world where helping a friend, never giving up and keeping a promise come alive in this amazing compilation of Dr. Seuss’ best-loved stories. The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie La Bird, and all the Whos down in Whoville are intertwined in an incredible crazy-quilt adventure in a witty, wild, whimsical world.
